Adults' Ability to Run the Government Earns a C- from Teens (WeR4Kdz)


Adults received a disappointing report card from the nation's youth last month in the ninth annual UCAN Teen Report Card. The grades indicate teens nationwide are concerned about government actions, the political process, and adult voting patterns. New Youth Created Report on Female Child Discrimination (National Service Briefing)


The report titled, “It’s Time to Listen to Us!” provides recommendations and advice from young people on what can be done to eliminate discrimination and violence against female children. Profiles of Children in Immigrant Families: the U.S. and 50 States

Twenty percent of children in the U.S. now live with at least one foreign-born parent. This new brief from Child Trends and the SUNY Albany Center for Social and Demographic Analysis finds four in five children of immigrants are American citizens, and nearly one-half speak English fluently and another language at home. Report Reviews Relationships Between Youth Activities and Substance Abuse (JuvJust)


The report indicates that youth aged 12 to 17 who did not participate in any school-, community-, faith-based, or other activities had higher rates of past month cigarette and illicit drug use than those who took part in four or more activities. Volunteering Among Disadvantaged Youth


Leveling the Path to Participation reports that youth from disadvantaged circumstances are less likely than other youth to experience service-learning, but are more likely to participate if asked by a teacher. Researchers also found that the disparity between disadvantaged youth and those from non-disadvantaged circumstances regarding the belief in obtaining a four-year college degree decreased when youth from disadvantaged circumstances volunteer. Guide Provides Research-Based Information on Preventing Youth Drug Use (JuvJust)


The Department of Health and Human Services' National Institute on Drug Abuse has released a second edition of "Preventing Drug Use among Children and Adolescents: A Research-Based Guide for Parents, Educators, and Community Leaders." The new edition includes information on risk factors for youth drug abuse, guidance on planning community drug abuse prevention programs, and descriptions of core elements of effective prevention programs.
